The compilation of the Qur’an was mainly caused by the death of many memorizers of the Qur’an during the Battle of Yamamah. During the battle, many companions who had memorized the Qur’an were killed, and Umar ibn al-Khattab became worried that parts of the Qur’an could be lost if more memorizers died.
Umar therefore advised Abu Bakr to collect the Qur’an into one complete book. At first, Abu Bakr was not willing to do it because the Prophet had not done it in that form, but later he accepted the advice. Zayd ibn Thabit was then appointed to lead the work of collecting the Qur’an from written materials and from the memories of reliable companions.

After the reign of Abu Bakr, the original compiled copy of the Qur’an was kept with Umar ibn al-Khattab. After the death of Umar, it was later kept with his daughter, Hafsah bint Umar.
