JAMB Comforts Distressed Student Threatening Suicide Over Failure to Register for UTME

In a compassionate response to a distressed student, the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has stepped in to console a young Nigerian who expressed suicidal thoughts due to his inability to register for the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The 2024 UTME registration concluded on Monday, February 26, as per the earlier announcement made by JAMB in 2023. However, one student, identified as David, took to social media to express his frustration at being unable to register for the examination after investing considerable time in obtaining his National Identity Number (NIN).

David shared his anguish in a tweet on Wednesday, February 28:

“Feeling suicidal, After struggling with NIN just to hear that the registration period has ended and I would have to wait 365 days again, I don’t think I can take the pain.”

Reacting to the distressing tweet, JAMB reached out to David, emphasizing that his failure to register for the 2024 UTME should not be seen as the end of his life.

In their supportive message, JAMB stated:

“Take it easy. Missing the 2024 UTME registration isn’t the end of life. What happens if you write and fail or even pass but don’t meet other criteria for admission? Be positive-minded and stay focused.”

JAMB’s response aims to alleviate the mental and emotional distress faced by the student, highlighting the importance of maintaining a positive mindset and focusing on future opportunities. The examination board underscores that life offers numerous chances, and setbacks in one area should not lead to drastic measures.

This incident sheds light on the pressures students face during examination periods and the necessity for timely and accessible support systems to address mental health concerns. JAMB’s swift reaction to the student’s distress signals a commitment to not only academic matters but also the overall well-being of the candidates.
